Bromley is the largest London Borough in London, it’s something of the jewel in the green belt, good connections to central London, many parks and open countryside, highly related schools, excellent leisure and shopping facilities. There are frequent train services to Central London and the major towns in Kent; London’s two main airports are easily accessible by road. Bromley is only one of a handful of boroughs without an underground station, but it does poses a tram network.

The first recorded mention of Bromley was when the King of Kent, Ethelbert, granted land by Royal Charter for the creation of the manor of Bromleag. The town became known as a coach halt on the route between the South Coast and London. It was the arrival of the railway in the mid 1850’s that provided the catalyst for the rapid growth from a village to a vibrant town and commercial centre in its own right.

The London Borough

With an area of just under 60 square miles, the borough is the greenest and most rural in London as well as being the biggest. Its origins lie with the London Government Act when in 1963 the towns and districts of Bromley, Beckenham, Chislehurst, Orpington, Penge and Sidcup became part of Greater London. This change wasn’t to everyone’s liking and Knockholt was returned to Kent in 1969 following a very committed local campaign.

The Borough includes; Beckenham, Orpington, West Wickham, Crystal Palace, Cray Valley, Penge, Chislehurst and Biggin Hill as well as Bromley itself. Bromley has been twinned with Neuwied in Germany since 1987, when the Mayors of the two communities signed a charter in Bromley to ratify the partnership.

Bromley Council has been accredited with the Two Tick Disability Symbol User status which recognises the Councils commitment to good practice in employing disabled people.
