But unless you have some recent knowledge of the area you might be surprised to see how varied the district is. The council has an area of responsibility that encompasses the coastal towns of Herne Bay and Whitstable as well as several villages including; Blean, Bridge, Chartham, Fordwich (technically a town), Harbledown, Herne, Littlebourne, Sturry and Thanington Without. The population of the district is now over 150,000, however just under a third of these live in Canterbury. If you’re thinking about working for this authority you might like to know:

The Benefits Of Working For Canterbury City Council

The published benefits of working for Canterbury City Council (details correct at time of writing) included a percentage of final salary (dependant on service) . The basic minimum annual leave allowance is 21 days a year and rises through to a maximum of 35 days. Relocation packages (including a mortgage subsidy) may be available in certain conditions. All staff however have access to the ‘well being’ programme as well as a childcare voucher programme. The Military Road site has significant amounts of free onsite parking. Canterbury City Council has a staff social club and is part of the cycle to work scheme that allows members to save up to 40% off the cost of a new cycle and equipment.

About Canterbury College

Canterbury College first started welcoming students in 1947. In has always acted as a regional educational provider attracting students from across East Kent. The physical campus has undergone an exciting transformation in recent years. Since 1996 Canterbury College has had Swale Campus as a satellite college. The college currently has around 10,000 students enrolled in about 300 courses, there are about 1,000 staff in post at the time of writing. This makes the College a leading employer both in the City and across East Kent. Vacancies are regularly published on the ‘current vacancy’ page of the website. The College doesn’t generally welcome speculative CVs,  all applicants are expected to complete the relevant application form. Informal applications can be made on a form and submitted to the HR department. The HR team have a 24 hour answerphone (01227 811282) and the recruitment email address is recruitment@canterburycollege.ac.uk. In common with many employers the College is driving applicants to a structured recruitment process.

The College has a fairly central position, set on the New Dover Road, a short distance from the St George roundabout and the city centre. The main bus station and Canterbury East railway station are in walking distance. Benefits for employees include a pension and life insurance scheme, excellent holiday entitlement and a staff discount scheme, there is a sports hall and gym on site.

The City Arms Inn – Canterbury Pubs

Canterbury Pubs and Canterbury Lager

A quick endorsement for both the City Arms Inn and Canterbury Lager. Having been forced to seek shelter from the heatwave on Thursday afternoon, I drifted into Butchery Lane. One of the old cobbled pathways linking The Parade and Burgate in the centre of Canterbury. Ducking down behind the Jack Wills store I found myself standing outside of the City Arms, trying to remember why its name was so familiar to me. Then It struck me, this was one of the Canterbury pubs that made it onto Buster’s top ten Kent pub rankings.

Golding Hops!

Although Buster has his critics in the fields of music and fashion, his epicurean credentials are beyond compare, I went in. Passing the small external seating area I came across a pleasant wooded interior, not traditionally Kentish but inspired in that general direction. Looking for reliable and trusted names on the pumps I was surprised to find a selection of local craft beers. Many brewed locally with Kentish ingredients. Momentarily stunned by both the heat and the range of choice available I selected a lager. This literally goes against the grain as I am typically an ale drinker. Canterbury Lager visually fulfilled all the immediate prerequisites of a cool, light refreshing drink. However upon the first taste I was transported to a foreign land, the cliche’ of fizzy, mass produced, warm weather session lagers fell away. There was a taste here unrecognisable; cold and refreshing yes, pilsner grain yes but also hops, Goldings hops… (lengthy extended pretentious description removed by the editor, available on request)!

Big City Burger

This was simultaneously a light refreshing beer but one with the depth and quality of flavour associated with East Kent hop varieties. I have enjoyed lager before, particularly in warm weather environment, but this is a lager for all seasons. There is no need to stress that The City Arms is an emporium serving a range of quality food and drinks. IIRC Buster recommended the Big City Burger, still available here for under £10. A big city burger with a pint of Canterbury Lager will set you back less than £15. Perhaps an essential experience for Canterbury residents and visitors alike (vegetarian alternatives available). Lunch can be pre ordered, 01227 458081 between 11am-noon. No food orders after 4pm.

Canterbury Pubs

Canterbury is still a place with a wide range of, pubs, inns and bars catering for almost all tastes. Historic buildings are ten a penny in this area and good food and drink can be found elsewhere. However the nonintrusive attention and professional service offered by the knowledgable bar staff is second to none. It’s well worth a visit and my experience fully endorses Buster’s five star rating.

The British Army

The British Army began life in 1707 when England and Scotland were merged together to form Great Britain. Nonetheless the institution has carried on more or less continuously to this day. Army 2020

If you’re thinking about an army job you need to look into the Army 2020 plans which are aimed at bringing about a dramatic transformation. Interestingly one of the big proposals is to split the traditional army into two forces: a Reaction Force and an Adaptive Force both of which would be supported by troops. Joining The Army Reserve

Throughout its history almost every major operation the British Army has been involved in has included Army Reserve soldiers. The Army Reserve is the largest of all the Reserve Forces The others being the Royal Naval Reserve (RNR), the Royal Marines Reserve (RMR) and the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (RAFVR).

Covering the United Kingdom, the Army Reserve is divided into three types of unit; National, Regional and Sponsored. Anyone thinking of joining usually has a choice of at least two types of unit, depending on how far they are prepared to travel to attend training.

Local (Kent Based) Army Reserve Units

You may know that the armed forces are undergoing a period of great change. Some regiments are being merged and other units may end up disappearing altogether. At the time of writing Army Reserve units in Kent included Army Reserve Ashford (REME – Engineering) based at the Rowcroft Barracks, Army Reserve Bexleyheath (specialising in IT and telecommunications) based on , Watling Street. The Canterbury Army Reserve (The Tigers) can be found on The Sturry Road and are an infantry/band unit. There is also an infantry unit in Dover whilst the Maidstone Army Reserve units are engaged in logistics and medical services. Fort Clarence in Medway is home to engineering and infantry units while the Army Reserve group in Royal Tunbridge Wells is an engineering unit.

The Application And Selection Process

The application process for the Argos Graduate Leadership Programme has in recent years followed this basic blueprint:

  • Formal application through CV and covering letter, competition is tough so if your application isn’t up to much you are likely to fall at the first hurdle.
  • If your CV passes muster you can expect to be interviewed over the telephone. If you pass this stage then you will be assessed in person.
  • You may be asked to take part in psychometric testing in order to build up a picture of your possible suitability.
  • The conclusion to the process is a selection day held in Milton Keynes, the eventual graduate recruits will be those who are successful at this final stage.

Argos ‘A’ Level Entry Scheme

There is a also a scheme for successful A level students considering a career in accountancy. The Home Retail Group take on a number of candidates who wish to learn the business and study for recognised accountancy qualifications like: AAT, ACCA or CIMA.   • Blain Pritchard are a genuine local firm of Chartered Certified Accountants serving the business community from offices in Sheerness and Maidstone.

  • PWC – One of the big four employers in the sector worldwide. Over 200 work on their London Gatwick site including 25 Partners.
